Simple compact smart charger

I have no real big complaints about this charger. I bought it because I wanted a smart charger that would fully charge my batteries without overcharging them. My only complaint would be the lack of four independent channels. In other words, you have to charge 2 or 4 batteries at a time. It cannot charge 1 or 3 batteries at a time due to the design of the charger. For full disclosure, I also had an Energizer fast charger (15 min.) that I used until the power connector actually broke on the PCB. That was a good charger too, but it reduces the life of the battery at the cost of quick charging. In closing, I would recommend this charger over the non-smart chargers offered by energizer.

why do the lights start flashing

When the lights start flashing does that mean that the batteries are fully charged.
I'm not 100% sure if my answer is accurate, due to the fact I didn't engineer the charger, but I believe they are considered fully charged. The batteries are usually still warm when it starts flashing. My theory is, it flashes while the batteries are cooling down after the charging has stopped. The flashing light stops around an hour or so and the batteries are cool by this time.

Heat reduces the life of the battery, so it is better for the battery's life if you charge it slower and let it cool down before using it. If you were to use the 15min charger, the batteries get almost too hot to touch. With that charger the fan continues to run for a period of time after the charging has stopped. This is my reasoning for my thoughts above.

Manual states count down timer of 5 thru 1. Mine has 8. Is there a problem or are the batteries just reallly depleted?

No problem, the charger will determine about how long it will take to charge depending on the charge level of the "dead" battery. So to answer your question, the batteries are really depleted and there is nothing wrong with the charger.
